Systems are in place to ensure that high quality, safe surgery is provided through the implementation of multi-professional clinical governance arrangements, the presence of trained and experienced staff, appropriately supported with the availability of diagnostic imaging, pathology services and access to blood and blood components throughout operating hours. The environment of the surgical service facilitates safe and effective care, including the provision of well-maintained and managed equipment, easy access for all patients, and the safeguarding of patients’ privacy and dignity.
The CHKS Standards criteria address these elements through succinct criteria statements that are supported by guidance which helps the organisation understand the intent of the criteria, so that it can be applied in the local context. Additionally, references are provided to direct further reading on the relevant topic. Throughout the standards the criteria are linked to key assessment frameworks including ISO 9001, the Care Quality Commission, Quality Statements and the Health Information and Quality Authority, (Ireland) National Standards.
